How to Clean a Grapevine Wreath

While grapevine wreaths look beautiful hanging on your front door, they sure don’t come from the store that way! Today on the blog we’re discussing a few tips on how to clean a grapevine wreath, techniques to remove unwanted leaves and debris, and which side of a grapevine wreath you should showcase.

Removing Leaves and Debris From Grapevine Wreath

The first step of cleaning a grapevine wreath is removing the stubborn leaves and debris that are stuck between the vines. Contrary to what other sources online suggest, the best tool to use isn’t a blow dryer. Instead, you’ll want to use an awl or screw driver. These tools are small enough to get between the vines to loosen up unwanted leaves and debris without compromising the integrity of the wreath itself.

This can be a messy process so, if possible, it’s best to clean your grapevine wreaths outside to minimize clean up. If doing so inside, I recommend using a trash bag (or trash can) to contain the mess.

Start off by getting a trash bag and opening it up, nestling the wreath inside the opening of the bag. Next locate areas of the wreath that have a lot of leaves and debris, put your awl in between the vines where leaves are and move it back and forth to clear them out.

You don’t have to remove every leaf from the wreath, just hit the high spots. Once done and with your wreath still “inside” the trash bag, pick up both the wreath and trash bag and give it a good shake. All of the debris should fall into the trash bag.

Choosing a Side of the Grapevine to Showcase

Choosing which side of the grapevine wreath to showcase will ultimately come down to the the cosmetics of each side. Ultimately you’ll want to showcase the side that looks the best! Keep in mind if there are imperfections in one area you can add elements (greenery, a sign, bow, etc) to cover that part while showing off the rest.

Once you choose the best side, lay the wreath on your table “good” side down and take a second look at the “bad” side. Are there any sharp twigs sticking out that could potentially scratch a door or wall? If so use wire cutters to snip those off. Ideally we want the back of the wreath to be free from sharp edges and as smooth as possible.

Lastly, flip the wreath over with the “bad” side down and make sure it lays flush with the table. How the wreath lays on the table is how it will hang on your door so you’ll want to make sure it’s flush and that none of the veins of the wreath cause it to tilt.

That my friends is how to clean a grapevine wreath and how to decide which side to showcase.
